| Circuit Clerk |

The circuit clerk is the official recordkeeper and fee officer for circuit court, family court and the mental hygiene office. The clerk’s duties are ministerial; that is, the duties are prescribed by statute, order, rule or other directive. |

| County Assessor |
|
|
It is the County Assesor's duty to establish values of all property, real and personal, in the County. Every three years the Assessor must complete an appraisal countywide and determine fair market value of the property in each jurisdiction. Excluding from this would be a special valuation provided for farmland and managed timberland. Also July 1st Personal Property Assessment forms are mailed to taxpayers to be completed and sent back in by October 1st. It is the legal responsibility of every property owner to report his or her personal property to the Assessor’s office each year. The Assessor maintains, as official records, County tax maps of the entire county which indicate all property and lot lines, set forth in dimensions or areas, and identify the respective parcels or lots by numbers, so ownership of parcels can be used as a reference to the appropriate records.

| County Clerk |
|
The County Clerk handles voter registration, changes in party affiliation/address/last name on voter registration, records deeds, liens, births, marriages, deaths and other judgments, and files wills. In addition, the clerk is responsible for elections; obtaining and training poll workers and counting ballots. He or she is responsible for keeping and storing the county’s vital statistics. And, the Clerk of the County Commission also functions as an election officer, preparing the ballot, conducting absentee voting, and performing other election-related duties as well The Clerk maintains payroll for all county employees, receives all accounts, pays county debts, maintains the county’s financial statements and maintains all orders from the County Commission.

| County Commission |
|
The Commission reviews and approves the budget of the elected officials of the county – the Circuit Clerk, County Clerk, Sheriff, Assessor, and Prosecutor – however, each elected official manages its own work, staff and budget. The Commission provides funding for (but does not manage) outside agencies, including the Humane Association, Kanawha County Parks and Recreation, the Yeager Airport, and others.
The primary function of the County Commission is budget development and management, overseeing purchasing for the county, management of county assets, and management of technology resources – overseeing the governing, management and protection of Kanawha County and its citizens. |

| Office of the Prosecuting Attorney |
|
The Prosecutor is responsible for the prosecution of crimes committed in Kanawha County, and serves as legal counsel for county government bodies. |

|
| Sheriff's Department |
|
The Sheriff is the Chief Law Enforcement officer within the county. Duties include process serving (serving both warrants and subpoenas), bailiffs and home confinement.
In addition, the Sheriff is the county's Treasurer responsible for collecting county taxes, including personal property taxes. |
